Sri Lanka Railways 🚂❤️


The Sri Lanka Railways is the main public transport service in Sri Lanka and is operated as a government department. Some key facts about its inception and services include: During the British rule, the first train journey in Sri Lanka took place from Colombo to Ambepussa on 27 December 1864. The main purpose of this was to transport coffee and tea grown in the central hills to the Colombo Port.

The railway system in Sri Lanka is divided into several main routes:

 • Main Line: from Colombo to Badulla.
 • Coastal Line: from Colombo to Beliatta.
 • Northern Line: from Colombo to Kankesanthurai.
 • Mannar Line: to Talaimannar via the Madhu Line.
 • Batticaloa and Trincomalee Line: connects the port cities of Batticaloa and Trincomalee.
 • Kelani Valley Line: a narrow gauge railway line running from Colombo to Avissawella. 

Current Service and Importance;

Transportation: Hundreds of thousands of passengers (especially those going for work) use the railway every day for their transportation needs.
 • Tourism: The "Udarata Railway" running from Colombo to Badulla is very popular among local and foreign tourists as the most beautiful railway in the world. 
• Freight transportation: Contributes to the distribution of fuel, mail and other essential goods throughout the island.
